Summary
From losing a grandparent to being made fun of at school, children, like adults, are faced with moments of loss, confusion, and sadness. We want to protect our children from everything, but how can we help them deal with spiritual challenges?
God, Can You Hear Me? is a multicultural, illustrated children's book that focuses on the questions and prayers young kids ask. Justine Simmons, star of the top ranked MTV show "Run's House," wife of pioneering rapper Rev Run, and a mother and stepmother of five, wrote the book in response to concerns she has heard from her own children, their classmates and their friends. God, Can You Hear Me? confronts the very real spiritual concerns of children between the ages of five and ten in an accessible, universal way.Justine Simmons is the star of the top rated MTV show "Run's House." Married for twelve years to Rev Run, a founder of the pioneering rap group Run-DMC, she is mom and step-mom to five children."Justine Simmons has a way with words and children like none other."- Sean (P. PreS-Gr 4-This idealistic tribute to God's place in children's daily lives broaches a series of worrisome questions from grade school boys and girls. They wonder about a range of traditional and modern concerns, including family problems, the loss of a pet, body image, and popularity. One girl asks, "My friend lives with her mom and dad, but I live with just one parent. Why can't I be like everyone else?" Another child wonders, "Grandma died. Is she really gone forever?" Each heartfelt query concludes with the plea, "God, can you hear me?" and is answered on the opposing page with a comforting response. The themes of love, kindness, and understanding are incorporated throughout the narrative. The text is illustrated with a collection of dreamy watercolors featuring multicultural children in a variety of family-oriented settings. The softly colored paintings are filled with light and suitably reinforce the author's gentle message. When talking about spirituality and faith, parents may want to share this book with their children, along with August Gold's Does God Hear My Prayer? (Skylight Paths, 2005) or Holly Bea's Thank You, God (H. J. Kramer, 2003).-Linda L. Walkins, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Brighton, MA (c) Copyright 2010. Publisher's Weekly Review
Simmons, wife of Reverend Run (a founder of musical group Run DMC) and costar of the Simmons family's reality series on MTV, Run's House, has penned a Q&A-style picture book to offer children a loose template for dealing with issues about which they might pray or talk to God. On alternating pages, a child voices a concern and Simmons serves up a reassuring, if sometimes-pat-sounding, answer, as if it were coming from God. A sample exchange reads: "Mommy and Daddy argue all the time. Do they still love each other?/ God, can you hear me?/ Mommy and Daddy may argue, but they still love each other. And they love you, too." Papp's crisply realistic oil paintings-many of them look like artistically manipulated photographs-feature a multicultural cast of kids and families in a variety of backdrops from beach to playground to city streets. This wide-ranging volume has potential as a starting point for family sharing as well as inspiration for young readers who may be looking for guidance or for ways to begin a spiritual dialogue.
