Gr 4-9-This set is complete and current. Generally, each flag is displayed on the top half of the recto of a spread, with boxed data below. The verso summarizes quite a bit of information about the country, state, or territory whose flag is displayed opposite. A âÇ£National DataâÇ box lists the form of government, land areas, major religions, etc. National anthems are only noted for some countries, suggesting a slight unevenness. In an introductory section, repeated in each volume, flag parts are explained, as are shapes and heraldry. States, territories, provinces, and possessions are listed alphabetically after their respective countries' listings. Volume 12 includes an extensive, useful index and much more. Here, students can find out what certain flag symbols (stars, tools, animals, etc.) mean. There are also specific flags shown, including those of the UN, Antarctica, EU, and the Olympics. Booklist Review

This set includes articles on flags of every nation in the world as well as on historical flags and flags of organizations and political groups. The entries in volumes 1-11 are arranged alphabetically from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, and each is presented on a two-page spread. However, entries for states appear within the entry for the country. For example, the flags for New South Wales, Queensland, and Tasmania all appear along with the entry for Australia. A title entry appears at the top of the page on a color bar that indicates the type of flag being presented. National and historical flags are discussed, as well as flags for international organizations, dependencies, regions, states, provinces, and territories. The first page of each entry offers information about the country, state, province, or territory, including its history and a box listing the nation's capital, head of government, size (in area), major religions, and other important data. Each entry also includes a locator map that shows the location of a place within its region. In addition, map coordinates are keyed to a world map that appears on the endpapers. The second page presents a large color illustration of the -national flag and another fact box offering key facts about the flag, including a description and its width-to-length ratio. The layout is open and neat, and the flags would copy nicely. An introduction is repeated in each volume and presents readers with some basic background information about flags, including the parts of a flag, flag shapes, the protocol for raising a flag, and an introduction to heraldry. The final volume offers information on various organizations and their flags, including the European Union, International Red Cross, and the Olympic Movement. Volume 12 also includes more information on heraldry and an introduction to many of the symbols used on flags as well as a comprehensive index. The other volumes lack an index. With more than 380 flags, this set would be a valuable resource for students in elementary and middle school, as there is little current material on the subject. --Maren Ostergard Copyright 2005 Booklist
