Summary
This old dragon is very hungry! And he's not going to stop until he's gulped down almost the entire kingdom, knight's armour and all. But is there any way of escape from a lazy dragon's gut? Perhaps a good belch will help...
Penny Parker Klostermann's adventurous play on the classic nursery rhyme, There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly , is brought to life through Ben Mantle's vivid illustrations. This silly tale is perfect for reading aloud, with rollicking rhymes that will have both children and parents giggling.
Author Notes
Penny Parker Klostermann spent her childhood climbing mountains and wading in rivers with her three sisters in Redstone, Colorado, US. In her adult years Penny's love for books, especially silly picture books that make her laugh, inspired her to write her very first picture book, There Was An Old Dragon Who Swallowed A Knight . Today Penny lives with her husband in Abilene, Texas.
Ben Mantle began his illustration career early, picking up his first award in a local library colouring-in competition aged seven. He went on to study Animation at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design before working as an animator in children's film and television. Ben has illustrated a number of children's books including Rudey's Windy Christmas (HarperCollins) and Callum's Incredible Construction Kit (Egmont) which won the 2013 Bishop's Stortford Picture Book Award. As well as the recently published Dinostars series, he is also the award-winning author and illustrator of The Best Birthday Present Ever! and The Best Christmas Present Ever! for Macmillan Children's Books. Ben lives and works in Brighton.

School Library Journal Review
K-Gr 2-No one seems to know why the old dragon swallowed the knight ("It's not polite!") In addition, the bright red beast proceeds to swallow a steed, a squire, a cook, a lady, a castle, and finally, a moat. At this point the creature decides to burp out everything (except the knight), and what preschooler won't love that! The author has used a broad range of words-savory, shady, fattens, tassel, guzzled, bloat, quote, perchance, amass, and billow. These will add depth to the young listener's vocabulary. Mantle's illustrations are full of primary colors and are quite expressive as the dragon gobbles each entity he encounters. Life in the Middle Ages is hinted at with the additional drawings surrounding each dragon tidbit. This will be a great addition to the kindergarten/first grade curriculum on comparing and contrasting similar stories. VERDICT A fine purchase for most collections.-Elaine Lesh Morgan, formerly at Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR © Copyright 2015.
