Three years after Samuel Ellsworth destroyed her life, Kieran Mullen unexpectedly runs into the one man who can help her when Matteo de Gama rescues her from almost drowning in one of Venice's canals. Matteo offers to teach Kieran everything she needs to know about the Italian art of vendetta, but Kieran is reluctant to accept the offer of his services, since Matteo's sizzlingly sexy kisses threaten to melt the icy reserve that Kieran used to keep her life from falling apart. As Kieran gets closer to putting her plan of revenge into motion, however, much to her surprise, she finds herself wondering if repaying Ellsworth for what he did will be worth the risk of losing Matteo's love. MacNish's lushly written, lusciously passionate Georgian historical, which is loosely linked to her earlier book Veiled Desires (2006), will delight readers with its intriguing mix of danger, deception, and desire.--Charles, John Copyright 2008 Booklist
